Choice of Typefaces:
For the body text, I chose Janson Text LT STD. I put this in size 10.5 font with 12.5 pt leading. I chose this font because it has a medium x-height, is easy to read as well asmanipulate, all of which were characteristics I wanted in a font. I thought that the 10.5 pt font with 12 pt leading gave the maximum potential for readability for the body text.
For the captions, I chose Corona LT STD. For the first two or three words of each caption, I used the boldface option of the typeface and put it at size 10 pt with 12 pt leading. For the rest of the captions, I used 8 pt font with 9 pt leading. I thought that this font worked well in captions and contrasted with the body text very well. I used this font for the sidebar as well, but I used boldface and 11 pt font with 14 pt leading for the title of each moment and then 10 pt font with 11 pt leading.
For the feature spread, the title is in ITC Machine STD with 60 pt font and 54 pt leading in a pure white. The second line is stretched 200%. I thought that the font would be very eye-catching and the stretched bottom line would attract the reader’s eye and add a cool effect to the spread.
The deck head is in News Gothic STD size 24 pt font with 30 pt leading. It is in pure white as well. I chose this because I thought it would be complimentary to the headline font and work well in the background as well.
The side of that, where the text begins, is in Janson as well, size 14 pt with 24 pt leading. It is in pure white, which I chose because I sticks out well from the background.
The text on the cover is all in Univers LT STD. The title of the magazine is in pure white and 93 black extended size 48 pt font. The white text below that is 24 pt font with 24 pt leading in 75 black oblique. The red font below that is 75 black size 20 pt font with 24 pt leading with C=6.11 M=100% Y=100% K=1.02% I chose those two colors because they are the two colors of a baseball, one of the images on magazine.
Choice of Visuals:
I chose this article on Mariano Rivera because it works well for a feature. The text works well with visuals and Rivera is well-known enough to find plenty of pictures to use in the magazine. Rivera is also one of my favorite players and the Yankees are my favorite team so picking this article, from Sports Illustrated no less, was a no-brainer.
I think you did a great job on making your headlines pop out from the picture. Regular text would be hard to see because of the complexity of the pictures. Your fonts are easy to read. You're first spread also has the wow factor. I was surprised that you were able to find such a great picture.
ReplyDeleteGreat job.
Although I hate the Yankees, I thought this was well done. The cover headline is creative and the first spread is nicely laid out. You connected the pictures well to the story and being a soccer fan, I liked the Cristiano Ronaldo ad on the back.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very good magazine spread. The coverline and the headline are both very clever and it really helps your magazine. The colors work well together too. The cover picture is very powerful and works well. My only problem is with your advertisement. It appears stretched. You probably should have found a bigger ad to use.
ReplyDeleteI really like your visuals. With a game like baseball there is always a surplus of great visuals and I believe you selected visuals that wen perfect with your feature story. The close up headshot is superb.
