Although this is an old map of Manhattan, it is still applicable today. The streets and avenues in NYC are arranged in a grid fashion, making it easier for people to travel back and forth and remember where they are relatively easily. The city may seem confusing to people that are not there a lot but it really isn't once you realize it is laid out in a grid pattern.

I think this is a great example of grid design in real life. I can say from experience that the grid system of New York City is useful and effective. I don't go to the city more than two or three times a year, but when I went to the city over spring break I was able to sufficient amount of navigation purely based on the grid system of the city. Great example.
