Choi: Magazine Project

Design & Story Strategy:

I wanted to do a feature story on an artist, so I first started thinking about which celebrity has a lot of great pictures. I decided to do Beyoncé because I came across a lot of great pictures. I found this from “The New Yorker” and loved their article because it gave Beyoncé this independent and retro flair. Since the article used so many different adjectives describing her as independent, flair, feminism, and fierce, I decided that I would use pictures of her where she is in black clothing. I think black, white and gray colors really gives Beyoncé an independent and strong flair.

My first spread shows a picture of her on a table. I wanted to continue the table on the first page, so I created a slanted gray box. I also shaped deck-head like a curvy body because Beyoncé is known for her curves. I felt that it also highlighted the primary head because the reader can obviously tell that it is a female’s body. I created gray horizontal and vertical lines on all the spreads because I wanted to have visual continuity. I got this idea from the windows on the first picture.

My pictures do not have captions because I did not think it was necessary. I wanted the magazine to be a feature cover article. So if this were real, the pictures would have been set-up by a photographer.

Choice of Typeface:

I used the fonts ITC Berkeley Oldstyle Std, Cochin, Garamond, Frutiger LT Std, and Aachen Std. All five fonts are easy to read. They are all also really versatile. Their versatility allowed me to use the fonts in many different ways.

  1. This was definitely the best one I saw. Not only was the curvaceous text unique and creative but the pictures and the use of gestalt principles for your color choice was impressive as well. It made mine look like a kids book. Good work

  2. You do such a good job with your color scheme. You keep all of the spreads connected with the photos and the extra graphics you added in. Your cover is very powerful and I really like how the telescope leads into the headline on the first spread. Overall, a very cool magazine design.
