Week 12-Walsh

Design Strategy:

I chose to use a feature article for the release of Vampire Weekend’s new album, Contra. Due to the bands genre of music, I wanted to make the spreads fun and aimed at a college audience. Also, since my magazine design is for a music magazine, I decided to use Rolling Stone as my main model.

I picked the picture that I put on the cover because I felt it was something I could joke around with. The band looks very bored, so I decided to use the exciting news of the album’s release to contradict their demeanor. The picture for my first spread portrays the entire band and it’s a very fun picture. The pictures on the second spread go along well with the article, and I felt that the photo from All Points West was a very striking black and white photo.

Typeface:

On my cover I used the two different members of the Magnesium MVB Standard. For the nameplate I used Magnesium MVB Standard Grime because I felt that the novelty of the typeface worked well with the name Good Vibrations. On the rest of the cover I used Magnesium MVB Standard Regular to maintain visual gestalt.

My main typeface, the one that I used for my header, deck-head, pull quote, and body, was Bembo Standard. For the header and pull quote I used the bold italic variation of Bembo, and for the body and deck-head I used the regular Bembo. I wanted a serif typeface for my body because I feel that it’s easier to read, and I used other variations of Bembo to maintain visual gestalt.

For my captions and sidebar I used Frutiger LT Standard to contrast the body text. This sans serif font fit in nicely in my magazine.
