Toney | Logo Project Re-Do

I am print journalism major, so I wanted to incorporate something subtle about my prospective profession. My name is not a very visual one (the best visuals I could think of were an actual toe and knee together), so I settled on using my initials pretty early. Next, I am Middle Eastern, and I wanted to subtly suggest something about my heritage in my logo. The common ground came through the shape of a pyramid. I am not Egyptian, but in Egypt, the pyramids are a symbol of beauty in the Middle East. The decision was made a lot easier when I remembered how news stories are written: in inverse pyramid format, with the most important information at the top of the story. I think the logo works together pretty well, and clues the viewer in to both who I am and who I want to be.

Playing off the Egyptian theme, I wanted to use a block serif. I’ve always like how Rockwell looked, and I used it in its regular setting throughout my project. It is very readable, and I think because my logo has a lot of detail and symbolism, getting my name across with a readable type was important.

My logo was very easy to draw. I used the Triangle tool to create two overlapping triangles, and the line tool to give the two triangles a singular, 3-D effect. I split the new pyramid with a line down the middle, and then used the divider as a base between my initials. I used a dotted line for my initials because I thought it provided the pyramid with a block/brick effect. Finally, I colored the pyramid in an orange color found in the top of my business card, the reporter’s notebook.

  1. I like this logo a lot. The logo is very simple yet you could definitely understand its concept. I'm not sure I love the font choice but it works so I don't have much of a complaint there. Overall it was a very well done project!
