Markland/Week 13
While looking for a website that displays clear, understandable hierarchy of information, I realized that Syracuse's webpages are an excellent example. There is a clear use of grids in the layout, as the information is placed into different organized sections. These four focus boxes are asymmetric, which gives the webpage some dimension instead of a stagnant centered grouping of information, but they are still aligned and pleasing to the eye. The information is nicely grouped into different categories for prospective students, current students, and miscellaneous information about the school and it's places of interest. These headings are large, upper-case font and the sub-links that correspond to them are left aligned. This main information sticks out from the rest of the links on the site with its different font and color. All of this creates an excellent visual hierarchy. The rest of the color scheme also works very well. The main focus is color orange (not surprisingly!). Two different shades of orange that are seen in the main photo on the left are used which creates continuity between the visuals and the writing. Dark/light shades of grey are used for some contrast. Overall, I'd say our school's website has a good idea of how to create effective pages.

I have always found SU's webpages kind of hard to use. They always seem to not clearly label things or make the page too cluttered. This page do have a good hierarchy of color and directs the readers eye around good though.
ReplyDeleteI like the way the Syracuse web page is set up. It's very well organized and things are easy to find. This only real problem I have noticed with the page is the color usage. The orange sections really draw away from the rest of the page, and that can be somewhat problematic.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Syracuse's Homepage is easy to navigate however when you delve deeper into the website it begins to be more complicated and harder to find info. There is alot of information and I believe they could do a better job when using different methods emphasizing a hierarchal pattern.
