Story Choice: After flipping through various fashion and beauty magazines, I decided that I wanted to take a different direction. I really enjoy being active as well as traveling. I came across an article on Shape.com, which is titled “Warm Weather Escapes.” The article talks about five places to visit that offer warmth, relaxation, and activities to stay fit. I really enjoyed reading the text and decided that I would be able to accurately represent the text visually, as it had no previous visuals.
Typeface: I chose to use three different typefaces. I used DIN 30640 Std Nuezeit Grotesk Bold Cond for my magazine title, cover lines, and folio. It is a simple, yet bold typeface and I think it really stands out, but is gentle at the same time. I wanted to be consistent throughout the spread so I used Scotch Roman MT Std in different sizes for my headline and for the category headlines on my second spread as well as my sidebar. I liked how this typeface is serif and it reminded me of many travel magazines that I have previously read. I used ITC Berkeley for my body text because it has a feminine and organic appearance, which I think is appropriate for the text.
Color: The only solid color that I used for my spread was for my side bar. I used the eyedropper tool and sampled the Bermuda pink sand beach picture’s water and used the teal color that it gave me, which was R= 56, G=160, B=185. This color complimented the spread very well, as many of the images I used had some shade of a tealish green in them. The images I chose were also very colorful. I tried to place them on my spread so that they were distinct, yet comparable. I think the colors present in all of the images throughout the entire spread work really well together and create continuity throughout the spread.
I absolutely LOVE this spread! The first picture creates fantastic visual interest. I want to know where this photo was taken, and if I can vacation there. Bracketing the information made important information easily found and contained. I like how you switched from the photos on the right to the photos on the left in the body of your spread. The consistent blue and green colors really gave me a sense of tropical islands and relaxation. The photos that you chose are stunning. Good job!
